Spread the love this Valentine’s week by sharing your love of food and robust wines.

If you have a penchant for Piedmont cuisine and like to get bold with a Barolo, then our Chef on Wheels tour will certainly whet your appetite and quench your thirst for adventure.

That’s right, we are teaming up again with Josh and Jen Ziskin of La Morra Restaurant for a bike tour and culinary exploration of Piedmont. Home of Barolo wines, the Alba Truffle festival an the birthplace of the Slow Food movement, Piedmont is not only one of the world’s most alluring gastronomic destinations, but it’s vine glad ridges and hilltop villages make it a premier cycling destination as well.

This year’s tour will run from October 14-19… just in time to watch the leaves change in the vineyards, taste the freshly-harvested Nebbiolo grapes and visit the world-famous white truffle festival in Alba. The ultimate pairing!

Exquisite biking and walking routes, tailor made for daydreaming. Exceptional wines. Timeless villages. What’s not to love? On a B&R trip you’ll meander through lush vineyards, sip grand crus in the fields where they were conceived, and wander cobblestone streets to find old friends. You’ll dine at some of the region’s best-known establishments and at bistros revered by the locals for their hearty country fare. It’s the only place we know of where fights can erupt over selecting the right vintage to pair with a prized Époisses .

Puglia Wine and Land

I recently was invited to attend the Puglia Wine and Land Educational program held in the wonderful region of Puglia in the heel of Italy. This part of the south is, in many ways, the real, unspoiled Italy. Here the landscape reminded me more of Greece than what we are used to seeing in Italy …not surprising as it was once part of Greece. Miles and miles of ancient olive groves and vineyards dotted the landscape and narrow roads lined with stone walls were interrupted here and there by whitewashed farms and villages.

Gathered here were travel professionals from Germany, Russia, Switzerland, Belgium, the UK and only me from the US along with wine buyers and press from all over the world. Our hosts in Puglia introduced us to the magnificent wines, olive oils (Puglia produces 40% of the Italian olive oil) and wonderful local foods. Pastas and breads made from the local durham semolina wheat have a golden glow and unique texture. Fresh produce was already growing in the fields and filled our plates at every delicious meal.

While there we stayed at a magnificent 5-star Masseria (a farm property fortified against centuries of invasions) and took time to visit several more Masserie along with full service resorts and small b&b properties. Since the area is surrounded by the Ionian and Adriatic seas, one is never far from lovely sandy beaches. Ancient hill towns, majestic castles and the “trulli” houses were all wonderful to visit.

After you’ve seen Rome, Florence, and Venice try to find time to visit this magnificent area of Italy. It will steal your heart away as it did mine!
